There are two key pieces that people gravitate towards when decorating a living room: the couch and the coffee table. Just like a decorated couch, a styled coffee table is an instant way to make a room feel clean and polished. I recently styled our coffee table in our home and struggled to find the right mixture of décor at first. I tried quite a few different combinations and came up a formula of sorts for how-to decorate a coffee table.
As focal points and high trafficked areas style is just as important as function. I bought our acrylic coffee table when we lived in an apartment where I wanted the clear table to provide the function of a coffee table without adding bulk to the space. I decorated the table then with a simple warm wood tray to add contrast to the cool clear acrylic and keep the table feeling light and airy. Moving the coffee table into our new home without the same space constraints, I wanted to take advantage of the full surface to make the table feel more hearty in the room. I started with a tray and books.
Trays and books add foundation and structure for smaller and stackable decorations that give the table layers for that styled look. I stacked a few books in the tray to add height and placed another book on the table turned another way to fill the space. The stacked trinkets I added at first felt like they were all too similar in size, so I tried a new combination.
When choosing the containers look for different textures and metals to bring into the mix and always add a natural element to the table for warmth and color like a wood bowl, plant, flowers or coral. I paired a marble, brass and crystal box with three brass shadow boxes (always add smaller objects in odd numbers) that brought variety of height and texture . For a natural element and pop of color, I added fresh cut roses.
The last thing to add to the table is a personal memento associated with a good memory or passion of yours (your books should do this too!). On our table we added the horseshoe we picked up at an antique store when we got engaged. Despite adding the perfect amount of scruffy and earthy texture to the otherwise delicate design, it’s a fun reminder of our engagement.
